Most philosophical thought experiments are intended to play a role in rational theory choice. But it is not entirely clear whether (and if so, how) these instruments of controlled speculation can achieve that goal. The underlying idea of the project is that a careful analysis of how thought experiments actually work in natural and social sciences, should allow us to formulate a normative theory of the philosophical instances.
