My presentation will have two parts. In the first part I will present the main ideas of an account of causal explanation that I have developed in my Ph.D. thesis Understanding Interests and Causal Explanation. My model basically combines three ideas: 1) an explanation is an answer to a contrastive explanation 2) an explanation gives us counterfactual information, and 3) explanation presupposes a mechanism that shows how the explanans brings about the explanandum. I will briefly discuss each of these. In the second part I will discuss whether these ideas can be used to make sense of the nature of macro explanations. After briefly presenting the, I will look more closely one influential suggestion to solve the problem: Frank Jackson and Philip Pettit¹s program model of explanation. I will argue that with my contrastive-counterfactual model we can explain why Jackson and Pettit¹s intuitive model works (when it does).
