The lecture will begin with a brief overview of the current state of philosophy mind, with a focus on the problem of emergence within a physicalist framework. Emergence of mind occurs on at least two levels (combinatorial and ontologic), and involves at least three problematic aspects (historical, phylogenic, ontogenic). Panpsychism is discussed as an alternative to mechanistic materialism, which bypasses or reduces many of these concerns. Further support for panpsychism can be found in the dynamical systems approach to mind, which, along with computationalism and connectionism, constitutes one of the main analytical techniques.
