The more one uses logic on the formalization of problems originated from the most variegated areas of investigation, such as philosophy, foundations of mathematics, linguistics, artificial intelligence, logic programming and computer science, the more necessary it is to have increasingly complex formal languages and calculi at one’s disposal. Not only in pure logic but also in the applied one it is increasingly common to be faced with hybrid ontologies, which require the development of new techniques and strategies. But to be able to deal with this ontological richness, and to model deductive systems adequate to meet some given specific necessities, it is not necessary to start from zero: one may quite well sew a complex logic from the combination of its ingredient logics, simpler and with known structures. One could expect, for instance, that each of these ingredient logics should be designed in order to deal with only one among the various aspects of the problem at focus. This was the motivation which led various active research groups, especially in the last ten years, to investigate the topic of combination of logics. To be more precise with what we mean by “combining logics”, we will start our presentation jumping back to the very notion of logic. Once we have sketched the kind of structures which we will be considering logics, we will take a look at the logical space and consider the kind of transformations that we can operate in it. To the basic mapping of a logic L1 into a logic L2 which preserves the structure of the original logic we give the name of translation. There are various applications of this concept of translation, among them being the fruitful tool given by the possible-translations semantics, an exemplary form of combining logics. We will briefly discuss here this way leading us to the study of the combination of logics.
