The aim of this paper is to present a dispositional model for the explanation of behavior. This model, we contend, suggests a viable method which, like the method of behaviorism, seeks to uncover relations between behavior and the environment, but manages to avoid a traditional shortfall encountered by the behaviorist method: since this method only accepts observable behavior as data for analyzing behavior, it can only explain why organisms respond differently to the same stimulus conditions in cases where reinforcement is obvious. In these cases, we have a explanatory jump, citing a causal influence that leaps over a temporal gap with no reference to the intermediate causal nexus. Since no appeal can made to the internal process (albeit neurobiological or mental), the organisms are black-boxed. However, for most behavior, the intermediate nexus has high explanatory significance (e.g. intentional behavior including deliberation or choice making, so-called stimuli independent behavior). Moreover, in some cases, reference to an external causal history is completely irrelevant (e.g. inborn behavior). The upshots of the dispositional model are (1) that dispositional explanations in themselves, that is, without an explanation of the disposition that is invoked, have a similar explanatory value than simple behaviorism (i.e. behaviorism that does not invoke a reinforcement theory). (2) Dispositional explanations combined with an adequate explanation of the disposition, can explain why organisms respond differently to the same stimulus, without restricting psychology to outside-the-head environmental histories. For instance, ascribed dispositions can be explained by reference to conceptual models, mental terms like beliefs and desires, a reduction to brain states, or by stressing the function of this disposition relative to a social or biological context. (3) This combined explanation strategy can be used for all sorts of behavior (e.g. spontaneous reflexes, emotional and habitual behavior, inborn behavior, intentional behavior).
