In 1968, in his Inaugural Lecture as the occupant of the first Chair in Logic at the University of Leeds, Peter Geach describes a Fall from Grace. He describes “a disaster, comparable to the Fall of Adam”. This Fall was Aristotle’s invention of Logic. Geach isn’t talking about Aristotle’s notorious modal logic; he’s talking about Aristotle’s invention of a simple deductive logic and how that represents a catastrophic fall. Clearly Geach thinks things were good before Aristotle’s invention of syllogistic logic, and so there is something ruinous and damning in Aristotle’s first steps toward a deductive system. This paper begins by looking closely at Geach’s claim about “corruptions in the history of logic”. The paper ends by suggesting that Aristotle may have been smarter than Geach gives him credit for.
