In this lunchtalk I will present an adaptive interpretation of belief merging. In the first part I will provide a brief (but almost complete) introduction to the idea of belief merging. I will focus on the first interpretation due to Revesz (1993), who presented merging as a generalized version of the revision (AGM-paradigm) and update (Katzuno-Mendelzon) operators (by removing their constraints of priority and thus establishing commutativity of the operanda). In order to formulate this ``Arbitration'' operator, the notion of ``distance'' between interpretations shall be introduced. This will be done first according to the standard definition from Dalal (1988), and later following a different interpretation, due to Satoh (1988). The formalization by Revesz is reconsidered in the light of the Arbitration Operator by Liberatore, Schaerf (1998). Various formulations for Merging by Majority follow: in particular, Majority by Partial Support from Lin, Mendelzon (1999) solves some problems of the previous formulations. These operators will also be mentioned. A general framework for the merging operators (able to interpret both arbitration and majority) is finally introduced as the Integrity-Constraints Merging by Konieczny & Pino-Perez (2002). In the second part of the talk, I will provide a first adaptive interpretation of merging via the Adaptive Logic ADM (Adaptive Doxastic Merging), in order to mimic Standard Arbitration. The Lower Limit Logic DM is a multi-modal logic of the KD4-style extended with belief operators (but without introspection). The formulation of the set of abnormalities represents Belief Conflicts, intended as inconsistencies concerning doxastic contents among two belief states. The Simple Strategy is shown to be enough to obtain the same results of Arbitration. The generalization of this logic is the final step of this talk: it consists in the formulation of a more general form of abnormalities intended as Merging Failures (inspired by the Merging by Projection presented in Liberatore, Schaerf (2007)) and it allows for various strategies, each providing an interpretation of a standard merging operator. This formulation seems to present the format of adaptive logics as a general framework for belief merging.
